Safeway Drivers Running Loads to Rapid City, S.D., for First Time in 25 Years
Teamsters Local 455 Safeway drivers are running loads to Rapid City, S.D., for the first time in 25 years, the result of an overwhelmingly successful contract ratified last fall that has already led to 41 new driver jobs since January 2023.
Taking these runs back in house could lead to as many as 60 new Teamster jobs by April 1, 2024.
"Not only did we make big improvements to our wages and working conditions in this contract, we have grown the bargaining unit which builds our power," said Safeway Steward Chris Knuth.
Knuth, Will Schulze and Bill Van Gundy served as force to ensure the Rapid City work is done by Teamsters, and done well.
"These jobs that were added to the bargaining unit are jobs that any driver would want and if they are looking for work, these are premium jobs in the Denver Metro Area," said Mark Madsen, Local 455 Business Agent.
