Imerys Perlite USA Inc.
Today, we're at Imerys Perlite USA's No Agua Mine and Mill, in northern New Mexico, where about 50 Teamsters serve as mill and heavy equipment operators, scraping perlite, a natural volcanic glass, from the above ground mine. Perlite is used in cosmetics, as a thermo-acoustic insulator and for horticultural filtration. Teamsters who work at the facility have deep generational ties, says Business Agent Kris Hernandez, where "there are fathers and sons and cousins and brothers working together." The No Agua mine is one of three in the US and six in the world, including those in Greece, Sardinia and Turkey.
